Sports portraits or "Sportraits" have become some of the most recognizable images in modern photography, but creating them doesn't require a truckload of lighting equipment or hours of Photoshop. The biggest difference isn't the gear—it's learning how to see light, direct your athlete, and make intentional creative decisions throughout the shoot.
In this class, I'll take you behind the scenes of one complete sports portrait session, showing you exactly how I work with an athlete in the studio, build dramatic lighting, and refine the final images in Lightroom. You'll see the complete process from camera to finished photograph, along with the small decisions that transform a good portrait into one that feels bold, cinematic, and memorable.
Whether you photograph high school athletes, seniors, college teams, or even your own kids, you'll leave with practical techniques you can immediately put into practice using the equipment you already own.

Learn how to direct athletes for authentic, confident portraits.
Create cinematic lighting using simple equipment and practical techniques.
Transform strong captures into polished images with an efficient Lightroom workflow.

Hi, I'm Kirk Nelson, a Northern Virginia sports portrait photographer specializing in creating cinematic portraits of athletes. My work combines practical lighting, dramatic storytelling, and efficient post-processing to create images that look larger than life while remaining achievable for photographers at every skill level.
Most sports portrait classes focus on gear.
This class focuses on seeing light, directing athletes, and creating images with intention.
You'll leave with techniques you can immediately use with the equipment you already own.

We’re spending three days talking all things people photography—lighting, working with subjects, posing, editing, storytelling, and creating images that feel more natural and intentional.
It’s going to be a really fun group of instructors, and I think you’ll walk away with a lot of ideas you can use right away.
